I Spell Kayak with 5 E's

Kayaking is quickly becoming one of the most popular exercise and adventure sports in the United States, not to mention the world, and Alaska is rapidly becoming one of the go-to destinations for both the experienced and the novice. Myriad opportunities, incredible natural diversity, friendly, expert tour guides, terrain vicissitudes, and a range of degrees of difficulty, make kayaking in Alaska a prime location for those who want more than just a creek or city river to kayak upon.

So, whether you are just starting out or are a seasoned kayaker, the following five “E’s” of kayaking in Alaska may help inspire you to visit the 49th state and discover for yourself what all the glorious chatter is about.

  1. Equipment – Unless you are determined to ship your own kayak to Alaska, there are kayak’s for rent, or are included in travel packages, but you will need to provide some of your own gear. Kayaks designed for the ocean are different from those made for rivers and streams. While they can be interchangeable, one would not normally want a river kayak on the sea for whale spotting. Moreover, the paddle you choose will also be in part determined by the type of kayak you choose, your size, and the location of your paddling. A personal flotation device (PFD) is required – think life jacket. Sprayskirts keep water out of the kayak, and are essential for both whitewater and sea-faring adventures. Helmets are an essential protective device and should be worn at all times.
  2. Experience – If you have never been kayaking before, stay away from intense rapids that are level 3 and above until you get the hang of the sport. Be patient and learn from an expert. Tour guides in Alaska will help teach you the basics, and will float with you as you gain strength and learn to navigate the kayak. If you are experienced, then be careful not to be too ambitious unless your skill allows to. When in Alaska, it is advised not to kayak alone regardless of your experience. Alaska has opportunities for both the novice and the experienced kayaker to equally enjoy.
  3. Environment – Alaska is such a naturally diverse state. The Kenai Fjords provide opportunity to explore the sea and Resurrection Bay while spotting whales and spirited porpoises alongside ridges and land mass carved out for thousands of years by glaciers. The white water rapids of the Charley River and the startling blue waters of Turquoise Lake in Lake Clark National Park afford the kayaker a variety of environments to choose from.
  4. Exercise – One of the great benefits of kayaking is the exercise one can get regardless of the intensity of the trip. Someone who weighs 165 pounds can expect to burn up to 375 calories an hour while kayaking. The more intense the paddle, the more calories one can expect to burn.
  5. Excitement – Becoming one with the land, or water in this case is not only for granola lovers, but something inherent in man throughout the ages, and the excitement of kayaking in Alaska provides unparalleled adventure and memories sure to last a lifetime. Skimming across the water as eagles soar overhead, or paddling to a sandy shore alongside rivers teeming with salmon who have come home to spawn, or watching bear, moose, and dall sheep, while exploring the flora and fauna of a particular area, or venturing under canopies of blue ice, make Alaska the premier destination for kayakers.

Now you have the 5 “E’s” of kayaking in Alaska. Are you ready to go? If so contact Alaska Alpine Adventures to book your kayaking trip.

Two Great College Rivalries

Sports are a big part of our culture and college sports are right up there at the top. College fans are some of the most loyal and diehard fans anywhere.  College rivalries are some of the top and fiercest rivalries around. Campus pranks and stolen mascots are just a few of the hijinks rivals must guard against. While we won’t be so pretentious as to say which rivalries are the top, here are a few of the more well known.

Florida vs. George.  Who would win in a battle between an alligator and a bulldog? Common sense might tell you a gator, but that is not always the case when it comes to the game unofficially known as “the world’s largest cocktail party. “ This rivalry, by both schools count, goes back to 1915 and has been played every year since 1926 with the exception of 1943 when Florida did not field a team.  Since 1933 the game has been held in the neutral site of Jacksonville and draws a huge crowd from both sides. Yes, given its nickname the game is well known for its pregame tail gaiting and postgame partying, despite officials from each school trying to down play the party atmosphere. One cool thing the schools did until recently is that fans from each school were assigned alternating seat sections of the stadium so the contrasting colors formed a “beach ball’ pattern in the stadiums. Of course the schools can’t fully agree on who has the most wins with Georgia claiming a 48-40-2 lead whereas Florida claims Georgia has a 47-40-2 record. That being said since 1990 Florida has won 18-4. Of course this is only one of the huge rivalries in the SEC.

Moving on to the (former) Big 12 brings us the Red River Rivalry also known as the University of Texas vs. the University of Oklahoma or vice versa depending on your fandom. This has emerged as what is the premiere rivalry of the Big 12, even bigger then UT vs. A&M and OU vs. OSU. This game usually has conference champion implications and often national championship implications as well. The game started in 1900 before Oklahoma was even officially a state and 2005 marked the 100th meeting between the two rivals. Texas holds the all-time series lead with a 59-42-5 record however after 1945, considered the games modern era, the record is astonishingly close with a 33-31-3 record. The game has always been played in the neutral city of Dallas during the State fair of Texas and until 2010 was always played at the famous Cotton Bowl on the fair grounds. It is now played at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, TX.

Why Paintball ?

In almost 20 short years the sport of paintball has become recognized as one of the world’s most exciting outdoor "extreme" sports. Millions of men and women of all ages and lifestyles play Paintball in over 40 countries. Whether homemakers, high school students, professionals, or retirees all paintball players share in common a love for adventure and a strong competitive spirit. Paintball is a sport where women and men compete equally. Where age is not dominated by youth. Like a game of chess, being able to think and act quickly and decisively is what makes you a star. Intelligence and not mere strength, speed, or agility is the keys to success in the sport of paintball.

Paintball is a combination of the childhood games of tag and hide and seek, but is much more challenging and sophisticated.

Although there are hundreds of different formats, typically a group of players divide into two or more teams to play "capture the flag". The numbers of players to a team can vary from one or two to hundreds, limited only by the size of the field and the imagination of the players.

The object of the game is generally to go out and capture a flag all the while trying to eliminate your opponent by tagging them with a paintball expelled from a special air gun. Games run from 20 minutes to hours generally depending on the number of players.

Between games, or after being tagged "out", players take a break to check their equipment, get more paintballs and to replenish themselves with food and water at a special designated "safe zone" all the while relishing in stories of victory or defeat. Win or lose, everyone has a great time.

Paintball is a character building sport. Players learn teamwork, gain self-confidence and develop leadership skills while having fun and getting welcome stress relief. Increasingly many corporations are finding out the benefits of the use of paintball games for staff and management development. This has been portrayed in television and in the movies in many cases (LA Law ®).

Paintball is an exciting, adrenaline-based sport and above all paintball is fun! It’s a chance to shake off day-to-day responsibilities and rekindle your spirit of adventure. When the adrenaline starts coursing through your veins, you can’t help but love the thrill of the game.
